Strongback Comfort Flip Wheelchair
Free shipping within 5–7 days on contiguous U.S. orders of $249 or more.
Slide across, not up and over.
If you transfer between a wheelchair and a bed, a sofa or a car seat several times a day, then on most chairs the armrest is the thing in your way. Lifting up and over it is the part that hurts, and it is the part that gets harder as the day goes on.
The Strongback Comfort Flip is the Comfort with armrests that hinge backwards out of the path. You slide across instead of lifting over. Everything else is the chair you already know: the same frame-integrated ergonomic backrest, the same award-winning Comfort heritage, the same aluminum frame.

What it feels like to use
Transfers become a slide, not a lift. Flip the armrest back and the path between the seat and a bed at the same height is clear. For anyone with limited shoulder strength, or anyone whose transfers are getting harder, that is the difference between managing alone and needing help.
Your caregiver's back thanks you too. A lateral transfer is easier to assist than a vertical one. If someone helps you move, the flip-back armrest changes their day as much as yours.
The posture support does not change. The same patented backrest as every other Comfort. The Flip is not a compromise version of the chair, it is the chair with a different armrest.
It still goes in the car. Wheels off with a push button, footrests off by hand, and the frame comes down to 16.1 lb. That is a two-handed lift, not a heave.
The backrest
A flat back panel pushes your lower spine into a C-shape. Your pelvis tilts back, your head comes forward, and staying seated becomes work.
The Comfort Flip carries the same shaped, frame-integrated backrest as the rest of the Comfort family. It is part of the frame rather than a cushion strapped on afterwards, and it fills the hollow of your lower back so you sit upright without thinking about it.
How the adjustment works. The backrest panel is held by wide hook-and-loop straps. You set the tension at any height along the back and to any firmness, so the support meets your own lumbar curve rather than an average one. The adjustment works across a range of −10 to +20 degrees. The curve itself is built into the frame; what you are setting is how firmly, and where, it meets you.
Rated for users up to 300 lb
The aluminum frame is rated for users up to 300 lb, tested to ISO 7176-15 for static, impact and fatigue loading. Static stability is at least 7 degrees, the reference test being ISO 7176-1. The frame carries a 5-year warranty.
One configuration, deliberately
The Comfort Flip comes one way: an 18 in seat with 24 in rear wheels, with the flip-back armrests fitted as standard. If you need a 20 in seat, or push-handle Attendant Brakes, the Comfort M and L are the chairs to look at, and both keep the same backrest.
Weights and measurements
| Measurement | Figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | Premium ultra-lightweight aluminum | Aluminum keeps the weight down without giving up strength, so the chair is light enough to lift into a car on your own, and it will not rust. |
| Propulsion | Self-propel | Large rear wheels with hand rims, so you can push yourself. An attendant can also push from behind. |
| User weight limit | 300 lb | Tested to ISO 7176-15. |
| Weight (without footrests, wheels and anti-tippers) | 16.1 lb | The frame alone. This is what you lift into the car. |
| Total Weight (frame, wheels and footrests, anti-tippers excluded) | 25.8 lb | The chair as it rolls. The shipping box is not included. |
| Seat width | 18 in | Measured between the inside faces of the clothing guards. The Flip comes in this one width. |
| Seat depth | 18 in | Measured from the backrest to the front edge of the seat. It sets how much of your thigh is supported, which is what stops you sliding forward over a long day. |
| Armrests | Flip-back, desk-length | Hinge backwards to clear the path for a lateral transfer onto a bed, sofa or car seat. |
| Rear wheels | 24 in | Quick-release. Off in about two seconds, no tools. |
| Front castors | 6 in | The small swivelling wheels at the front. They carry the chair over thresholds, door frames and uneven pavement, and they are what makes the chair turn. |
| Parking brakes | Push-to-lock, one at each rear wheel | Applied by hand at the wheel. Push-handle Attendant Brakes are standard on the Comfort M and L, and are not offered on the Flip. |
| Footrests | Swing-away, detachable | Come off without tools. |
| Backrest adjustment | Hook-and-loop strap tension | Set at any height and to any firmness, across a range of −10 to +20 degrees. |
| Unfolded (L x W x H) | 42 x 28 x 36.5 in | Set up and ready, footrests deployed. |
| Folded (L x W x H) | 30 x 16.5 x 30 in | Everything still attached. Taking the wheels and footrests off cuts roughly 2 to 4 in from the width. |
| Static stability | At least 7 degrees | The chair resists tipping on a slope of at least 7 degrees. The reference test is ISO 7176-1. |
| Frame warranty | 5 years | Seat, footrests and auxiliary parts, 12 months. |
Weight is the frame alone, without footrests, wheels and anti-tippers: what you lift into the car. Total Weight is the chair as it rolls, frame plus wheels plus footrests, with anti-tippers and the shipping box excluded.
The Comfort Flip weighs 16.1 lb as a bare frame. Frame, wheels and footrests together weigh 25.8 lb, excluding anti-tippers and the shipping box. We publish both, and we say which is which. Some manufacturers quote only the lightest number they can measure. Always ask what a stated weight includes.
Find your seat width
Measure the widest point across your hips and thighs while seated, then add 1 inch. That is your seat width.
| Seated hip width | Seat width | Strongback model | Weight capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 15 in | 16 in | Comfort S | 300 lb |
| 15 to 17 in | 18 in | Comfort M, Comfort Flip, Excursion M | 300 lb |
| 17 to 19 in | 20 in | Comfort L, Excursion L | 300 lb |
| 19 to 21 in | 22 in | Heavy Duty | 375 lb |
Between two sizes? Go up, not down.
A seat that is slightly wide is comfortable. A seat that is slightly narrow is not. The Comfort Flip comes in one size: an 18 in seat. If you need 16 in or 20 in, the Comfort S and Comfort L carry the same backrest. Call us at (757) 349-7790 and we will size you over the phone.

Frequently asked questions
What are the flip-back armrests on the Strongback Comfort Flip for?
The flip-back armrests on the Strongback Comfort Flip swing up and back so nothing blocks the side of the seat during a transfer. They let you slide sideways onto a bed, a car seat, a commode or a shower bench without lifting your body over a fixed armrest. If you transfer several times a day, or if a caregiver assists, this is usually the single feature that decides which chair works.
How is the Strongback Comfort Flip different from the standard Strongback Comfort?
The Strongback Comfort Flip differs from the standard Comfort in the armrests. Both chairs carry the patented Strongback backrest, both are self-propelled on 24 in quick-release wheels, and both are rated to 300 lb. The Comfort Flip adds armrests that hinge back for side transfers. The standard Comfort has fixed desk-length armrests and comes in an 18 or 20 in seat; the Flip is 18 in only. Set up, the Flip frame is about an inch longer and half an inch wider than the Comfort M; folded, the two are within half an inch of each other, so check the folded dimensions if trunk space is tight.
How much does the Strongback Comfort Flip weigh?
The Strongback Comfort Flip has two published weights, and we label both. Its Weight, the bare frame without footrests, wheels and anti-tippers, is 16.1 lb, and that is what goes into the trunk. Complete and ready to roll, its Total Weight is 25.8 lb. The 24 in wheels come off without tools, so you never lift the whole chair at once.
Is the Strongback Comfort Flip a wheelchair or a transport chair?
The Strongback Comfort Flip is a wheelchair. Its 24 in rear wheels carry ergonomic hand rims sized for you to propel yourself. A transport chair has small rear wheels, no hand rims, and only moves when someone pushes it. If you will always be pushed, look at the Strongback Excursion instead.
Is the backrest on the Strongback Comfort Flip adjustable?
The Strongback Comfort Flip backrest adjusts by hook-and-loop strap tension. The panel is held by wide straps, so you set the tension at any height along the back and to any firmness, across a range of −10 to +20 degrees. The lumbar curve itself is built into the frame rather than being a cushion, so what you set is how firmly and where that curve meets your own back.
Is the Strongback Comfort Flip suitable for someone who transfers with a slide board?
The Strongback Comfort Flip has flip-back armrests that clear the side of the seat, which is what a slide board transfer requires. Whether the chair suits a specific transfer technique also depends on seat height relative to the surface you are transferring to, so talk to your therapist, or call us at (757) 349-7790 and describe the surfaces you move between.
Does the Strongback Comfort Flip have Attendant Brakes?
The Strongback Comfort Flip does not offer push-handle Attendant Brakes. Every Strongback has a push-to-lock parking brake at each rear wheel as standard. If you need Attendant Brakes so a caregiver can apply the brake without bending down, they are standard on the Strongback Comfort M and L.
What sizes does the Strongback Comfort Flip come in?
The Strongback Comfort Flip comes in one size: an 18 in seat with 24 in rear wheels. Measure the widest point across your hips and thighs while seated. If the answer comes to more than 17 in, the Strongback Comfort L at 20 in is the one to look at, and it carries the same backrest.
What weight capacity does the Strongback Comfort Flip support?
The Strongback Comfort Flip is rated to 300 lb, tested to ISO 7176-15. Choose a capacity that sits above your weight with margin rather than at it. If you need more, the Strongback Heavy Duty is rated to 375 lb with a 22 in seat.
Does the Strongback Comfort Flip fit in a car?
The Strongback Comfort Flip folds to 30 x 16.5 x 30 in with everything still attached. Taking the quick-release wheels and footrests off cuts another 2 to 4 in from the width and brings the lift down to 16.1 lb. It fits the trunk of most sedans. Send us your car model and we will check.

Great!
I’ve had this chair for nine interesting years. Throughout my transition from passive passenger to fully independent manual user, this chair has been everything for me. It’s light enough for me to travel with independently, has a full back and slight recline for when I’m out of spoons, but has the fold down back for active situations. Every other wheelchair has aggravated my lumbar arthritis, but I can spend eight hours in this gem in full comfort. I went to get a custom built chair, and the rep had to tell me honestly that there was no chair he knew of that would be better for my needs than this one. It’s not exaggerating to say that this chair changed my life, and helps me live to my fullest. Thanks Stronkback!
I am a 68 year old left leg amputee and needed a light weight full sized wheelchair that I could lift by myself into the back of my Jeep or Pickup. This chair is perfect! All the features of much heavier chairs and more comfortable. This chair is great! I love it.

This wheelchair turns on a dime. Folds up easily, fits through the doorways of our tiny old house. My husband is 63 and it has been a godsend.
This is the only wheelchair we used that has a ergonomic back - you feel it the moment you sit in the char - my back says thank you
